Seeing Stars – Astronomy picks up in Vasco
The Association of Friends of Astronomy (Goa), an NGO that has been active in the field of popularising Astronomy in the state for the last 30 years, set up its 7th chapter in Goa at Vasco in May 2013. It has been slowly but steadily been building up the interest of Vascoites towards the thrilling hobby of Astronomy.
An evening with stars was organised at Bogmalo beach, in association with Rotary Club, Dabolim on 29th Dec ’13. The event was well coordinated by Satish Nayak, President, AFA(Goa) ,Videsh Khandeparkar, Science Coordinator, AFA (Goa and Karuna Sharma, Vasco Coordinator, AFA(Goa). The event was open to public and got a good response from the students of Vasco who had gathered there to view the stars through the telescope.
As a continuation, a daylong symposium titled “Earth Workshop 2014″ was organised in assistance with The Rotary Club of Vasco at The Rotary Hall, Tilak Maidan, Vasco on 4th January.
For a whole day from 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. students and teachers from different schools around Goa enjoyed a feast of knowledge and information as various topics of Earth Sciences were unrolled. Lectures on ‘Antarctica, Kingdom of Ice’ by Dr Alvarino Luis, Sr. Scientist, National Council for Antarctic and Ocean Research, Vasco; ‘Our Weather”, by Dr Ramesh Kumar, Chief Scientist, National Institute of Oceanography, Dona Paula;’ Oceans & Oceanography’ by Mrs.Sujata Kaisari, Sr Scientist(Retd.), NIO; ‘Earth in space and time’,by Satish Nayak, President, AFA(Goa) and ‘Life on Earth’,by Videsh Khandeparkar, Science Coordinator, AFA(Goa) were delivered on the occasion.
The aim of this session was to educate the participants towards the unknown facets of our beautiful but misunderstood planet and to develop a sensitivity towards better understanding the problems that our planet faces today due to our mismanagement.
