Fashioning a career in the designer garment world – Meet Puja Mapxencar
All of 23 years – but with her head on very firm shoulders – Puja Mapxencar of our neighbourhood has forayed into the world of fashion design.
Born in Germany, where her family resided for over 3 decades and where her grandfather was a very respected surgeon, Puja came to India when she was in the 1st standard.
She did her schooling at the St. Joseph’s Institute. “I was not very good in academics and therefore realised I would not get into the technical stream. But I knew I was a creative person. I therefore opted to go into the vocational stream in Commercial Garment Designing and Marketing at the Carmel College for my XI and XII” says Puja, as she narrates the beginning of her journey into the fashion garment world.
She then put in all her efforts to get into the best institute in Fashion and Garment Technology. Her hard work paid off and she stood 16th in All India merit for admission to the premier National Institute of Fashion Technology. She opted for the NIFT Bengaluru and graduated in 2014 specialising in Fashion Design.
She interned with Sonali Design Salon in Vasco and also worked for the Nirvana T-Shirt brand.
She decided to strike it out on her own and then set up her store – “Kandida” in Panaji in October last year. The USP of her brand is “Organic Quirky Indian Fusion Wear.” Her brand name is dedicated to her family who have supported her immensely in her endeavours.
Her collection aims to provide Indian garments with a contemporary touch.
Puja offers designer wear at affordable prices incorporating print, embroidery and organic fabric in experimental silhouettes (in kurtas). Her store changes its theme and collection every three months. The present theme is the “Folk – Box” collection. This theme is inspired by the folk arts of India, especially Madhubani and Warli art and the silhouettes are “Box Fitted”. The prices of her collection starts from a very affordable Rs.600/- onwards. Puja’s store also offers “Bio-Wash” leggings which are bio-degradable and available at a very attractive price of Rs. 600/- .
She has also designed and produced her own unique collection of jewellery in silver and semi-precious stones.
Her products are also available online at www.kandida.in and also through the major portals like Amazon, Flipkart and Snapdeal.
” One needs to have the will and the passion for what one does – business is not about money only!”, avers Puja Mapxencar, revealing a maturity that is well beyond her years and experience.
We are sure to hear more about this fashion designer who is passionately pursuing her dream.
