Meet the oldest resident of Chicalim- Catarina Da Costa

Caterina Da Costa - Chicalim (3)Caterina Da Costa - Chicalim (1)Catarina Julia Brigida Da Costa will turn 95 this February and has the distinction of being the oldest resident of the Chicalim village.
Born on 13th Feb 1920, Catarina hails from Candolim. She lived in Africa in Dar- e- Salam for some years before marriage, where she did her schooling and learnt to speak Swahili fluently.
She married in 1941 and moved to Chicalim, her husband’s village. She resides in that very house that was built in 1890 by her father-in-law, which is now is one of the oldest abodes in Chicalim. Her husband was the lighthouse In-Charge at Fort Aguada and St. Jacinto island. He passed away in 1995 at the age of 84 years.
Catarina had thirteen children – 10 sons and 3 daughters. She has now outlived three of her sons. She resides with her third son – Willy Da Costa and Apolonia her youngest daughter in her ancestral house in Chicalim that bears no sign of wear even after 116 years.
Though she has bouts of memory loss she is still physically active and in good health. She recounted her memory of the liberation in 1961 when families from the area that is now the Airport Road took shelter in her home when there was some firing near the airport. The land on which the present Naval Armament Depot stands was her family property.
Catarina’s grandmother lived to a 100 years and she seems to be following in her footsteps. We pray that this senior most citizen of Chicalim is blessed with many more years of good health and happiness.
