Science lovers in Goa are quite familiar with the Association of Friends of Astronomy (Goa) an organization formed 32 years ago in Panjim for the popularization of Astronomy and science in the state.
Today the Association of Friends of Astronomy (Goa) is a Grant-in-aid NGO under Dept. of Science, Technology & Environment, Govt. of Goa and is well known for the wonderful work carried on to take astronomy to grass- root level both at hobby and academic levels.
Different activities like sky observations, presentations, film screenings, workshops, lectures, exhibitions and so on are conducted throughout the year. The Public Astronomical Observatory has now set up mini observatories through various chapters located at Margao, Mapusa, Morjim, Borim and Canacona.
On the occasion of International Solar Day 2013 on 5th May ’13 a new Chapter was inaugurated at Vasco city located at Regina Mundi High School, Chicalim.
The inaugural ceremony got underway in the evening of Sunday 5th May at Regina Mundi High School hall. Cdr. Narayanan graced the function as Chief Guest. Mr. Sunil Kher, Entrepreneur and Brother Anish, Headmaster of the School were the Guest of Honour. The program was well attended by the public and ably supported by Rotary Club of Dabolim Goa. The Association of Friends of Astronomy (Goa) Secretary Mr. Satish Nayak underlined the aims of the organization and explained different activities proposed in Vasco.
The program concluded with distribution of mementos and sky observation session on the newly inaugurated 6 inch reflector telescope. It was because of the efforts of the Vascoites, Lalit Saraswat and Vasco AFA Co-ordinator Karuna Sharma and Rotary Club of Dabolim Goa that the organization could be set up in Vasco.
The formal sky observation sessions at Vasco will get started from November this year as soon as the monsoon cloudy sky time in Goa get over. Meanwhile a number of other programs like astronomy workshops, lectures, etc., will be regularly conducted at different venues in the city during the monsoon months to build up interest among the Vasco crowd.
Now, we just have to wait for the rains to get over and astronomy enthusiasts from Vasco will be able to leap higher into the mysterious and unending cosmos on a voyage of intrigue and excitement!!
