The Krishnadas Shama Goa State Central Library is a state of the art reading and knowledge enhancement facility set up by the Directorate of Art and Culture, Govt of Goa. This facility in an aesthetically created building designed by well known architect Gerard D’Cunha. This library can rival any such facility around the world. This five floor centrally air conditioned, climate controlled facility has an impressive range of facilities that is completely free for the citizens. The library is divided into various sections. The Newspaper and Magazine Section offers over 250 popular magazines, 50 research magazines, 20,000 E-Journals, 5 Data Bases for higher learning and 29 national and local newspapers. There is a separate Goa Rare Book Section and an archive of 37,000 books of pre-liberation vintage in Portuguese, Latin, Spanish, French, Sinhalese and English. There is also a micro film library of old books. The library houses a Law Section, Reading Terraces and a CD ROM facility for educational documentaries. The Children’s Section is a spacious area with books for various age groups. It also provides a play area for tiny tots, an audio-video section and an impressive 50 seat auditorium with a huge 15 foot wide video screen where children’s groups can watch various educational and video stories by well known authors free of cost. An internet browsing section can be availed for just Rs. 10/- per hour. The library has a fully digital membership record facility. State of the art ‘Automated Book Return” machines can be operated and books can be returned 24 X 7 through a machine placed in the outer foyer. There is also an art gallery attached displaying works by various local artists and sculptors. Regular art workshops are conducted here. The Curator, Mr. Carlos M. Fernandes elaborated that this facility was created to enable all sections of the society to benefit. The use of this library facility was completely free and books and magazines could be borrowed at a very nominal membership fee which is refundable.
